Friday, August 31st, 2012

Being a holiday weekend, SaatchiNY’s on a half day today. Which means that’s an entire half day for you to process all the awesome in this week’s edition of Links You Should Give a S#*t About. Happy browsing, and have a fantastic Labor Day Weekend!

PRESIDENT AMA

President Obama harnessed the power of Reddit’s AMA platform . . .  but didn’t say too much.

THE RISE OF VISUAL SOCIAL MEDIA

This is a great piece on the ever-increasing presence of visual marketing in the world of social.

SAMSUNG VS APPLE DECIDED

So courts have decreed that Samsung owes Apple a LOT of money for copyright infringement. Here’s one reason why this could be a good thing for creativity in the mobile space.

THIS IS WHY CATS RULE THE INTERNET

Because people make videos like this one of a Siamese meowing the theme song to Game of Thrones.

RIP JERSEY SHORE

We’re aware that this will prompt mixed emotions for most of you. The Jersey Shore has been cancelled.

Spontaneous Karaoke

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

As a follow-up to its current Layers “Karaoke” TV spot, Trident has launched a new digital promotion, “Spontaneous Karaoke.” Watch, laugh, and spark some fun into your day as people sing and dance to Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long” for the chance to win $10,000 and a year’s supply of Trident Layers gum. Even though Saatchi employees are not eligible to win the prize (sorry folks), submitting your own Spontaneous Karaoke video offers you the chance to become the most popular person in the office. Hopefully.

The contest is open for submission, so be sure to submit a video and partake in the fun! Mark your calendars and don’t forget to vote for your favorite videos beginning 10/8. So spread the word, tweet about it, share on Facebook, and enjoy some Spontaneous Karaoke.

Visit the Spontaneous Karaoke tab on the Trident Gum Facebook page to learn more.

7×7 is Coming

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

Seven presenters. Seven minutes. Seven topics. That’s the basic premise for SaatchiNY’s ongoing series 7×7. It’s a great way to learn about cool stuff happening both inside and outside the ad industry, and it’s one of our favorite things we do as an agency. If you haven’t been to one before, you can check out videos from most of our past presenters on the H/H YouTube page.

On October 4th we’ll be hosting 7×7: 6th Edition as part of advertising Week. It’s happening at BB Kings at Times Square and we’re pretty excited about making it a big, fun, exciting event. We’re also hoping to get the folks from the agency more involved then ever before – which is why we’re actively soliciting suggestions for presenters. Know someone cool?

Give us a shout and tell us why they should get 7 minutes of air time. Space is going fast . . . so hop to it!

CREATIVE WW: Beer!

Monday, August 27th, 2012

Today we’re launching a new series dedicated to the work being done by our Saatchi compatriots around the globe. Our first edition is dedicated to beer, which we happen to like a lot here in NYC.

First up is a  piece of film from Saatchi London celebrating “Arthur’s Day.” What’s Arthur’s Day, you might be asking? For lovers of a good pint, it’s your new favorite holiday. Paint the Town Black, and great work guys.

And not to be outdone, our friends from Del Campo Saatchi & Saatchi in Argentina have created (yet another) great piece of work for Andes. Because who doesn’t love a good Edward Scissorhands spoof?

Links You Should Give a S#*t About

Friday, August 24th, 2012

Since we’re rapidly approaching the end of the summer, we’d like to suggest you follow this week’s Links You Should Give a S#*t About up with some sunshine and a trip to the nearest beach. Happy Browsing!

INVISIBLE BIKE HELMET

This one’s been all over the internet in the past week, but since biking plays such a prominent role in NYC we couldn’t pass up the chance to share such a stylish new accoutrement. All we can say is that the invisible helmet rules.

SPREADSHEET STOP MOTION

Most stop motion animation is impressive simply by virtue of how much time and effort goes into it. This stop motion animation is impressive because it does something cool and beautiful with Excel.

TWITTER AS CASTING DIRECTOR

In case you needed any more proof of the power of social media, Twitter is now playing an active role in Hollywood casting decisions. Fanboys of the world rejoice, the next Batman is yours for the picking.

INSTACUBE

Here’s a digital picture frame that will let you stream a flow of your Instagram photos directly from the web.

THE SUPER PAC APP

New York might not be getting the full brunt of super PAC advertising this year, but battleground states are being overwhelmed by all the noise. This app works like Shazaam, except instead of telling you who recorded a song it lets you know exactly who was behind the ad. A must have for those seeking to stay politically informed leading up to November.

MICHAEL CHABON POP-UP

Michael Chabon is one of the most celebrated authors we have in America, so his new book Telegraph Avenue is already kind of a big deal. To ramp up excitement, the publisher is launching a pretty amazing promotional campaign that includes a massive interactive e-book and this real-life record store pop up.

Up Our Alley

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Today we’d like to point you in the direction of an awesome (and important) fundraiser coming up next month that Égalité, the Publicis Groupe interagency LGBT employee resource group is taking part in.“But why should I keep reading about an event not happening until October?” you might be asking. That’s easy! All interested parties need to sign up by the end of next Wednesday (more details on that below). Plus – bowling! So, yeah.

The event, appropriately titled “Up Our Alley,” is a bowl-a-thon that benefits the ongoing work of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. There is no fee to join and participants are asked to reach a fundraising goal of $500, and many exceed it! After two months of fundraising, the event culminates in an evening of bowling and partying at Bowlmor Lanes in Union Square.

ABOUT UP OUR ALLEY
In its 13 year history, Up Our Alley has raised more than $1.2 million for seven vital programs of The Actors Fund as well as men, women and children around the country struggling with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses. Together, with your help, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS can continue to provide these individuals with the medical services, nutritious food and safe housing they need and deserve.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED
The event will take place at 6:30pm on Tuesday, October 23rd at Bowlmor Lanes in Union Square. There will be a bunch of teams from LGBT employee resource groups from different advertising agencies so it’ll be a great opportunity for some healthy competition amongst our industry colleagues.

If you’re interested in joining our team, please email here by end of day on Wednesday, August 29th. If you’d like to be placed on a specific team with a friend or colleague, please make note of that in your email and we will do our best to make sure you’re set.

Want to know more about Égalité? Visit the Égalité Facebook page or reach out to Akash Sen with questions.

ADCOLOR WIN

Monday, August 20th, 2012

We’re happy to share with the world that SaatchiNY’s very own SVP Management Director, Gina Christie, is set to be awarded a 2012 ADCOLOR Award in the category of Change Agent. The award celebrates prominent leaders of color and leading advocates of diversity in the Advertising, Marketing and Media industries. The Change Agent award in particular recognizes leaders that creatively and actively develop diversity in their industries, bringing unique perspectives together to create ideas that inspire loyalty.

A CRASH COURSE ON WHY GINA IS AWESOME
A native New Yorker, Christie joined the Saatchi & Saatchi NY family nearly five years ago. Her focus has been on driving brand growth and creating ideas worth sharing for top clients such as Olay and General Mills. Christie’s concern for the futures of those around her has driven her to lead Saatchi & Saatchi’s involvement with The Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem. The school provides low-income female students of color with an outstanding college-prep education and a personalized, dynamic, hands-on learning environment in which young women can thrive academically. Furthermore, she is an active member of the Saatchi & Saatchi Diversity Advisory Board and the Publicis W.A.T.E.R. Coalition (Women for Advancement, Transformation, Empowerment and Renewal), exemplifying her community leadership and ability to inspire others.

The ADCOLOR Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas from October 18th through October 20th, 2012,
