Friday, December 21st, 2012

It’s the last day of the world (or at least the last day of the work year)! To celebrate, we’ve put together our final round of Links You Should Give a S#*t About for 2012. Lots of fun stuff. We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank our readers for staying tuned for what is now our 3rd (can you believe it?) year at H/H. You guys rock. Happy Holidays, and see ya in 2013!

MOST CONTAGIOUS – 2012

contagious001

Contagious Magazine is one of the best places ever for finding cool advertising stuff. Their “Most Contagious” list is the coolest of that cool stuff. This means you should probably definitely maybe check it out.

LIVESTREAMING THE APOCALYPSE

Just in case every rational person is wrong and this IS the last day of earth, here’s a handy roundup of live-cams around the world where you can watch all the action (or lack thereof).

APOCALYPSE-THEMED CRAIGSLIST ADS

And here’s a look at the funny people using the impending doomsday to their advantage on Craigslist. Perhaps a few copywriter candidates to be found here HR?

WTC 1 GETS AN ESCALATOR

escalator

Since the WTC site is just up the street, we thought this post on Gizmodo was too cool not to share. This is what it looks like when you haul an industrial-sized escalator up 100 stories in the air.

EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SOCIAL (FROM THE PAST YEAR)

Socialmediaicons

A lot of stuff happened in the world of Social Media in 2012. Here’s 100 of the top stories as curated by Simply Zesty. Plenty of reading material to get all you community managers through the break.

THE TECHNOLIDAYS

Yes we already posted this video on the blog. No we don’t care. This song has been stuck in our head all week and we don’t see it coming dislodged anytime soon.

After sharing some photos yesterday of SaatchiNYer’s celebrating the Holidays, a wave of other images hit our inbox. In fact, we had so many photos submitted that we decided a follow-up post was merited. Without further ado, check out all the smiling faces at The Great Red and White Bash of 2012™.

Holiday Spirit

love - int

We’re continuing our countdown to the break with a few photos of SaatchiNY-affiliated holiday celebrations. First up, here are some candid shots from last week’s annual gathering of the planning department. Everyone looks so nice and happy! We also included the above photo of a Lovemarks themed cupcake display . . . because who doesn’t love Love and Cupcakes?

And here’s an Editors alert – are you a SaatchiNYer with photos from your department/account’s holiday celebrations? We’d like to post them here for posterity (and to brag about how awesome all our people are). If you got em, please send them here before Friday. Thanks!

Technolidays

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

Ladies and Gentlemen, we present you with our new frontrunner for “Favorite Agency Holiday Video of 2012.” It’s called Technolidays and comes to us from our friends and compatriots at Team One.

The video above is part of a larger holiday campaign that utilizes 3D printing, humor, robots, and even some dubstep. You can see all of the goodies at Technolidays.com (and we’d strongly encourage you to do so).

Well done guys!

The Gift That Never Started Giving

Monday, December 17th, 2012

sweater - thumb

You know that time during the holidays when you open a gift, look inside and think – “Wow, this is sort of horrible?” We’ve all been there. But the hard truth is that almost all of us have given a dud gift at some point.

To set the mood for the last week of 2013, we’re put together a comprehensive list of the avoidable flops, hopefully helping you to avoid picking one on your last minute shopping spree. Happy Holidays!

Duds for Dads (Brothers)

ties

  • Ties – if it isn’t Salvatore Ferragamo, your dad doesn’t want it
  • Electronic Dartboards
  • Low-quality dress shirts
  • A mug that says “I love you” or has your face on it – no doubt from the local mall
  • The re-gift – that random thing you have no use for that is unisex enough to give to your brother without spending money on him

Missteps for Moms (and Sisters)

bodyworks

  • Bath and Body Works products.
  • Crappy jewelry that no one wears from discount stores.
  • Appliances, especially if your Dad gives one to your Mom.
  • The “coupon” for babysitting, a free hug or 15 minutes of your time – because you were too lazy or broke to give a real gift.

Flops from Mom, Dad, Grandma or anyone else Adult You doesn’t really know that well

fruit basket

  • DIY projects – No one will ever make their own ant farm or brew their own beer (okay, maybe a few creatives have a homebrew going in their apartment . . .)
  • Cheap chocolate – the calories are never worth it, and now you just feel guilty for throwing food away
  • Fruit baskets – On second thought, cheap chocolate’s not so bad after all.
  • Ornaments – Unless it has some serious meaning behind it – No. Just, no.
  • Mittens or homemade sweaters – mittens are for children and homemade sweaters are itchy
  • The Spa Package – We put this here because your mother probably bought it from your local hometown spa, which she will thereby use to force you to come home more often

Generic But Okay Gifts

Gift-Card1

We didn’t want to be a TOTAL Grinch, so here’s three acceptable (yet generic) gift options:

  • iTunes Giftcards
  • Starbucks Giftcards
  • Visa/Amex Giftcards
  • Cash. It’s the universal gift.

Links You Should Give a S#*t About

Friday, December 14th, 2012

Music, creative, recaps of the entire year . . . good stuff abounds on the internet this week. Plus – t-minus one week until the holiday break, so there’s plenty to celebrate. Without further ado, here’s this week’s Links You Should Give a S#*t About. Happy browsing!

DROPBOX AND MUSIC

dropbox

Dropbox might be taking on music in the clouds. Could be pretty interesting.

GOOGLE ON 2012

Google’s developing a tradition of great year-end ads. Here’s their latest.

THE GOLDEN GLOBES

The Golden Globes announced their nominees for this year. Also, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are hosting – so that should be awesome.

THE CONCERT TO SAVE NEW YORK (and New Jersey)

Every one of your parent’s favorite musicians played the Garden Wednesday night to raise money for Sandy relief.

#POLOWERS

Here’s a simple gamification technique, paired with social media in a clever (and effective) way.

Season’s Greetings

Thursday, December 13th, 2012

It’s almost the holiday break – which means it’s also time for an annual message from Publicis Groupe CEO Maurice Levy. We’ve got to hand it to him (and the folks at Digitas France) for having a little fun with YouTube’s functionality and our penchant (to use a French phrase) towards short attention spans. Anyway, we’ve embedded said video for you above. Vive les vacances!

7×7 :: 6th Edition :: The Vids

Wednesday, December 12th, 2012

7x7 - 6th - thumb

So we’re a bit late on the draw with this one . . . but better late than never, as they say.

Especially with this particular group of presenters, which includes a former Supreme Court clerk, a rock star, a performance philosopher and much more. For those of you that missed the last round of 7×7 (or those that came and want to relive the magic), here are all the presentations from 7×7: 6th Edition.
