NYC Cliffs Notes

Thursday, January 31st, 2013

New York always has cool stuff going on, but sometimes there’s just SO much that we end up going home and watching Hulu. To help out, we’ve decided to weed out some of our favorite, most affordable, outside the norm options to make sure you stay informed, entertained and awesome. Anyone have personal favorite NYC destinations? Hit us up in the comments.

Bowlmor Lanes (10 University Pl.)

bowlmor

Formerly Employed Wednesdays at Bowlmor includes $4 bowling and cheap beer. As our Chase clients say,
“Seize the Wednesday!”

Bushwick Country Club (618 Grand St., Brooklyn)

photobooth

Feeling photogenic today? For $3 you can use the old-fashioned photo-booth at the Bushwick Country Club … and have a drink while you’re at it.

The “other” Chinatown

Chinatown

Few people know that Flushing, Queens is the real Chinatown. You won’t find signs in English, you probably will have no idea what the food you just ordered is, and you’ll feel like you just got away with a trip to China for just $2.50 (aka your Metrocard swipe). Take the 7 train to the last stop on the Queens bound side and be prepared to leave Manhattan behind

Brooklyn Academy of Music

BAM, or The Brooklyn Academy of Music is well known to locals for being the home of progressive stage performances. BAM is located in downtown Brooklyn and includes an opera house, a theater and a cinema.

***Full disclosure: Stain Savers is in no way a real product by Tide (but we love it anyway)

For Placement Only

FPO - int

Happy Monday! To kick-start your week we’d like to point you in the direction of a design-tastic project by Mariam Farooq, who’s an Art Director for Toyota at SaatchiNY (and her former Saatchi partner Ari Bazinsky). She’s designed an engagement ring that should get a knowing chuckle from everyone on the 18th floor – the FPO.

The For Placement Only engagement ring is for those guys out there who want to pop the question, but haven’t quite saved up for a 4-carat diamond. It’s also perfect for advertising and design nerds who just want a unique way to usher in married life.   Each ring is made from solid, high polish brass and comes in a swanky velvet jewelry box.  If you’re interested you can pick one up at her Etsy shop.

SUNDANCE

sundance

It’s cold in NYC this week, but it’s almost always colder in Park City Utah. Known the world-round for the not-so-little-anymore Sundance Film festival, the city has been inundated this week by film critics, film makers and celebrities of all sorts. You can actually watch 12 of the festival’s best short films right here, and Vulture has done a great roundup of all the debuts that you’ll be excited to see in theaters a few months down the line.

PUPPY BOWL IS HUGE

The Puppy Bowl isn’t just adorable, it’s also highly profitable. The annual cute-fest is commanding big ad revenue this year, mostly because people can’t look away from a room full of puppies.

VIDEO COMES (BACK) TO TWITTER

vine

The CEO of Twitter tweeted a video link using Vine, a video service recently acquired by the micro-update site. Is it a sign that this is how videos will live on twitter moving forward? Lots of people seem to think so.  Bonus points to Dick for his use of raw red meat for the announcement.

Super Stain

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

The match-up for Super Bowl Sunday is set and there’s nothing left to do but sit back, wait, and get excited about the commercials. And with the intriguing brother vs. brother story-line, we’re genuinely excited for the football too (lack-of-NYC-teams-aside).

We’re ALSO excited that one of our spots for Tide (above) is in the running for CBS’s all-time best Super Bowl Commercial. We know we already mentioned this last week, but voting is still open . .  . so consider it a gentle reminder to go here and cast yours now. If we make it to the final three, the spot will be part of the live vote to determine the all-time winner.

The Snackulator

snack - int

Way back in September we ran a post about Fruitsnackia – a land of fruit and fun and zany creatures of all varieties. Today we’d like to point you back to the site, because the fun just got a little more expansive.

In addition to all of the cool stuff you could already do in Fruitsnackia, the Fruit Snacks team has just added the Snackulator X-75F. The world of Fruitsnackia is all about creativity. So to help kids get in on the fun, the Snackulator X-75F gives kids a way to create their own Snackian citizen and possibly have it featured in a brand new commercial.

It’s fun for grown-ups too, we promise. In just a few easy steps you can create your own citizen of Fruitnackia, and if you’re as good as us you’ll end up with something awesome like this:

Go, create, enjoy.
