Links You Should Give A S*%t About

Friday, December 9th, 2011

It’s Friday and you know what that means! Time for our weekly links roundup! I’ll be handing the reigns over for Links You Should Give A S*%t About, but couldn’t resist one final opportunity to share my favorite things on the internet this week.

LEONARD FRIEND

Our latest obsession? Leonard Friend’s first single, “Serious Music.” We can’t stop tapping our feet… or swooning. If you’re thinking this guy looks familiar, you may be recognizing Alex Feder, formerly of The XYZ Affair. After moving to the west coast, he decided to pursue a solo pop career as Leonard Friend. Read more about his full album on Consequence of Sound.

WELCOME HOME

Forget flowers! At Europe’s busiest airport, Amsterdam Schiphol, you can now create and print custom canvas banners on site. Charges aren’t to hefty, with costs ranging from €4-€15.

UNROLL.ME

You know how sometimes you subscribe to something you think will be awesome but then it’s not? And how sometimes it’s incredibly difficult to find out how to unsubscribe? Or maybe you’re just too lazy… Either way, unroll.me is for you. Watch the video above and clean up your inbox! They’re still in beta, but welcoming new peeps.

TWINE

Twine is a wireless square with sensors that notifies you via email, Text or Twitter to let you know what your things are doing. You can set it to let you know when someone’s at your door, when your laundry is finished… The possibilities are nearly endless! They’ve already reached their funding goal on Kickstarter, but you can still show your support – Or pre-order the Twine for only $99.

Some really fun ones this week. Enjoy!

A DUET WITH SIRI

If you’re not already familiar with Jonathan Mann, he’s been writing a song a day for over a year now. But I have to say, this is one of his bests… a love song, err, duet, with Siri.

FALL RECIPES

We’re going to take a gander and say that this is the only cook book you’ll need all winter. OK, maybe a slight exaggeration, but not by much. Tasting Table has collected their favorite recipes, from bacon-jalepeno cornbread to creole spiced salmon to maple-parsnip cake, and we’re dying to try them all out. Potluck soon?

NERDY DAY TRIPS

Dr. Ben Goldacre was looking for nerdy day trips, in his words: “from Sea Forts to abandoned nuclear bunkers, dead victorian racecourses, roads that are falling into the ground, narrow gauge railways that take you to a power station, wherever. I like decaying infrastructure, terrifying modernity, and enthusiast-run museums with 6 pages of small-font text explaining every exhibit (looking at you, Bletchley Park).” After tweeting his request and getting tons of responses, he and a few others decided to archive via a map. It’s centered around London, so the rest of the world needs to get on adding their favorites ; )

IT’S ALMOST TIME…
itsalmo.st let’s you create a beautiful countdown almost instantaneously. We’ve been making countdowns for just about everything since discovering it.

THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH

Let’s be honest, you loved The Phantom Toolbooth as a kid. And this year, the book turns 50. And this Kickstarter project is a documentary following the author & illustrator back to Brooklyn, celebrating the very beginnings of The Phantom Toolbooth. They’ve reached their goal, but you can get some sweet goodies in return for your support.

OCCUPY GEORGE

As Occupy Wall Street rages on, we continue to see more clever ways to spread the message of the 99%. Our latest favorite are the stamps from Occupy George, which turn money into knowledge. In the group’s own words, “Occupy George informs the public of America’s daunting economic disparity one bill at a time.”

OBSCURA

Want to steal your friends’ Facebook pictures for your next slideshare, but feeling guilty? Obscura is an iPhone app that gives users a way to tweak photos to hide sensitive data or even nudity. Options include black rectangles, stars and mosiac patterns that can be strategically placed to cover up revealing areas or disguise someone’s identity.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming, folks!

MILE-WISE

Enter in your frequent flier details once and MileWise will let you know when your points are expiring or how much those points are worth – whether you’re trading or buying an add’l flight. Very cool.

 VELVET BRIGADE

Velvet Brigade asks aspiring designers to upload their sketches – up to 5 – and then allows their community to vote on a style which will actually be produced. The designer gets 5% of the sales and their name on the tag, but also the credibility that comes along with selling your items.

Links MBA Students Should Give A S#*t About

Friday, September 30th, 2011

On Tuesday, we had some MBA students visiting from Virginia and I promised to impart some wisdom on them. But first, I think I scared them by standing on a chair and later asking them to say ‘f*$#.’ But let me tell you, these MBA students stood the test! (Here’s the presentation, if you’re interested.)

Of course, one person’s wisdom is never enough, so I took to the internet to pull together things that have taught me, inspired me and in some cases even confused me:

100 Personal Branding Tactics Using Social Media.

Chris Brogan has got it covered.

29 Ways to Stay Creative.

29 solid pieces of advice in under 2 minutes. A bargain if you ask me.

All Market Research is Wrong.

A controversial topic covered by someone I’m particularly fond of, Faris Yakob.

Blogs, books, ideas and people to follow.

A comprehensive list complied by Edward Boches, originally for BDW students.

How to Explain An Idea.

I’m still working on this myself. A great post by my colleague, Mark Pollard.

Vizualize.me.

Turn your resume into a piece of art in a single click.

You may or may not be surprised to know that the biggest piece of advice that people from Twitter had was to not get an MBA. Several people responded saying MBAs weren’t worth the money or time spent while others said MBAs were only valuable if you worked while you completed the school.

What do you think? Are MBAs worthwhile? Are there resources I missed that you’d share?

Time for our weekly roundup, featuring some especially awesome stuff this week!

GAMING IS AWESOME

Turns out your kids being into video games isn’t necessarily that bad. In this instance, scientists who were stumped by a molecular puzzle decided to post it online, turning it into an online collaborative game and the puzzle was solved in less than 10 days. Wowzers.

MY NAME IS ME

My Name is Me is an awesome site devoted to giving people the choice to use whichever name they choose for social networking sites. To quote the wonderful Clay Shirky, “To preserve the political value of our digital tools, people need to be able to speak their minds without fear of reprisal.”

HOUSEBITES

Oh man, I can’t wait for this service to come to the US. British startup, Housebites, is reinventing takeout. Watch the video above to learn how.  :-)

SMILEY

Know who that guy is? No? Alright, let us introduce you to Scott Fahlman, the inventor of the ASCII-based emoticon of the smiley face. He first used the smiley face on a message board 29 years ago (on Monday) so go on, through some extra :-) into your decks.

GOT THE KE-EYS?

OK, I’ll admit it. I haven’t seen the friends episode where that line is used, but I am guilty of forgetting and/or losing my keys from time to time. Which is why I’m particularly excited that for $300, I can get rid of my keys completely and use my phone instead. Lockitron lets you unlock your door remotely via text, the web or even an iPhone app. And if friends are coming by, you can even give them a temporary code for use. (Sounds ideal for house guests and house cleaners!)

FROM THE DESK OF GAGA
A new obsession of mine thanks to Jared. Who knew Lady Gaga wrote a column in V Magazine?!

GRIND

Grind The future of co-working. Not gonna lie, pretty jealous of this kickass office! (grind spaces.com)
