Saatchi Style: Fermented Beads

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

H/H team member Thea Hughes has a love for fashion (as exemplified here), and when we asked her about some awesome new beads she wore to work last week, she was excited to tell us they came from locally grown Brooklyn brand Fermented beads. We asked if she was interested in doing a write up for the SaatchiNY crew showcasing the brand, and as luck would have it, Fermented recently threw a 1-year anniversary party, which she detailed for us below.

Placed atop a Brooklyn rooftop with the Manhattan skyline in view, Brooklyn’s own Fermented Beads celebrated their 1 year anniversary…and we were there to catch the inside scoop.
Cups were endlessly filled, beats were on steady and almost every wrist was adorned with a Fermented Beads bracelet. The Claw, Snow Day and Brooklyn Blossom, just to name a few.

Two months back we had the pleasure of meeting Christopher Carter (Co-Founder) & Jason Smith (Brand Ambassador) at a Brooklyn recording studio session with the Curators of Dopeness. Ever since then, we’ve been joining forces, creating new friendships, and most importantly dawning that Lion brooch and perfectly fit beads. Hand crafted in Brooklyn, these beads are nothing short of a lifestyle choice and they’ve been creeping through the underground on the east coast with a vengeance.

Before you go check out there website, here’s a few more pics from the Fermented Beads 1 year celebration.

375 Style: Laura Massie

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

As with most creative companies in NYC, we’re not short on employees with an amazing (and sometimes bold) sense of style. To celebrate the fashion-forward among us, we’ve created 375 Style – a feature replete with photos and insights into their style. This week: Strategic Brand Planner Laura Massie.

WHAT ARE YOU WEARING (BRANDS)?

Jacket: J. Crew
Top: Madewell
Skirt: Club Monaco
Shoes: Also J. Crew
Jewelry: Family heirlooms.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PIECE AND IS THERE A STORY/GOOD DEAL BEHIND IT?

Both my necklace and ring carry sentimental value. The necklace was made from a charm bracelet my sister and I inherited from our grandmother. My Mom split the charms and had a close friend of ours design the necklaces for us. I love the contemporary look with the added leather and jewels, and reminder of my grandmother in the charms.

My ring was passed down through my Mom’s family to the first born daughter when they turned 16. True story, I lost it once at my grandmother’s funeral. Luckily, once the snow melted away a few months later, someone found it and returned it to me.

WHAT/WHO INSPIRES YOUR STYLE?

Usually I will steal inspiration my friend’s good style or straight out of the catalogs or off mannequins. I like having pieces I can easily throw together in the morning and a closet that can work season-to-season. My jacket was a purchase I made 5 years ago, that I continuously find outfits to wear it with. Kate Middleton, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston all have great style too.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE (HIPSTER-CHIC, DUMPSTER-PREP, ETC.)?

Again, I think my style could be described as pretty “classic.” I like structure/versatility and pieces that can work together. Courtney Winegar described it as “polished-prep” … which I guess I probably aspire to be. Maybe on a good day I get there, but on a bad day, I may fall under your category of “dumpster-prep” (well, hopefully not). I also grew up as an athlete, so weekends are casual and I usually spend most of my time running around in Lulu Lemons and tennis shoes.

ANY GOOD DEAL BEHIND WHAT YOU WORE IN THE SHOOT?

The shoes were on sale! I am a speed shopper – I think the last time I went shopping, I was in and out of the store within 10 minutes. I love clothes, but I am not someone who loves to shop, and don’t take much time to bargain hunt. I go into stores with something specific in mind, find it, and buy it, most of the time without even trying it on. I have to (literally) run into a deal to take advantage. Well that or shop on Gilt.

375 Style: Courtney Griffin

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

As with most creative companies in NYC, we’re not short on employees with an amazing (and sometimes bold) sense of style. To celebrate the fashion-forward among us, we’ve created 375 Style – a feature replete with photos and insights into their style. This week: AAE Courtney Griffin (@courtgriffin)

What are you wearing (brands)?
No particular brands that anyone would recognize. I found all the pieces at various thrift shops around Florida and New Jersey. Oh and then the tights are from Target. They have a fantastic selection of colorful tights.

What’s your favorite piece and is there a story/good deal behind it?
I don’t really have or wear a lot of jewelry, but this necklace is one of my favorite pieces. I found it in one of those small, knick-knack-type shops back in Tallahassee, FL where I went to school (and where there are a lot of small, knick-knack-type shops).

It’s kind of whimsical and different and has a bird– all traits I’m drawn to. It’s much like tiny watering can and pair of glasses necklaces that I own, although those are sadly bird-less. I also think it was around $20 which makes me love it even more.

What/who inspires your style?
I’ve always loved the styles of the 1950s/60s because there was so much color and such interesting design. I guess I try to incorporate the same ideas in much of what I wear; mixing in both older and more modern pieces. A lot of inspiration comes from the things I see, whether it be on the subway, on a store rack or in photos online. Recently, Pinterest has become a wonderful source of clothing inspiration.

How would you describe your style?
I would describe it as somewhat all over the place, but in a way that comes together as just “me.” Many of my things might look questionable on the hanger, but I like to bring them to life with other pieces in a way that makes them great again (or at least great to me).

Floral, lace and obnoxiously patterned dresses are definitely a staple of mine. I am often compared to both a Kindergarten teacher and a Kindergarten student (I believe this is in part due to my overuse of cardigans). My mom doesn’t like a lot of my clothes. She says they’re very “unique.”

Any good deal behind anything you wore in the shoot?
I got these boots for $4 in Asbury Park. My sister calls them my Helen Keller boots. I’m assuming because they are really, really old and Helen Keller was similarly really, really fashionable. Regardless, they were quite a bargain and I wear them a lot. Everything I have on was a good deal though. I believe this dress was only $8.

375 Style: Laura Sammartino

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

As with most creative companies in NYC, we’re not short on employees with an amazing (and sometimes bold) sense of style. To celebrate the fashion-forward among us, we’ve created 375 Style – a feature replete with photos, insights into their style and, of course, clothes.  This week:  Junior Planner & Assistant Account Executive Laura Sammartino.  She started at SaatchiNY as an intern two summers ago and Saatchi was so impressed with her they decided to keep her on- and in two departments nonetheless. Style + Talent = Double Threat

What are you wearing?

Shirt- H&M

Jeans- Banana Republic

Gold Belt- J. Crew

Snake skin heels- BCBG

Black Raincoat- Laundry by Shelli Segal

Jewelry: necklace-Leslie Danzis / watch- Lucien Piccard/ gold bangles- a gift/ yellow, white & rose gold stackable rings-Effy / gold and diamond ring- it was my grandma’s!

What’s your favorite piece and is there a story/good deal behind it?

Ahh-I didn’t wear my favorite piece for the shoot, but it’s a gold and silver necklace made from three old Italian coins. If I’m choosing favorite piece that I wore for this shoot, I’d have to say my raincoat. It was a last minute purchase before leaving to study in Rome, and as far as raincoats go, I think this one is pretty unique (and it does the job!).

What/who inspires your style?

I’m sure it’s inadvertently the places I go and people I see, but I really just choose things that I like, look good in (hopefully), and that are at least somewhat comfortable.

How would you describe your style?

I don’t think I have a particular style since wardrobe selection is typically dependent on either the weather (Weather.com is my homepage) or my daily outlook.  If I have to pin down an over-arching “style,” then I’d probably go with “classic” – with some unexpected detail to break up the potentially boring.

Any good deal behind anything you wore in the shoot?

Gilt group makes me think I got a good deal on my steel and diamond watch- I paid $165 and the “actual price” was $1300.

375 Style: Danni Mohammed

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Danni Mohammed is an Integrated Planning Director at Saatchi NY. In today’s edition of 375 Style we examine what happens when London meets NYC, breaking down two distinct layers.

What are you wearing (brands)?

White shirt blouse – A staple from American Apparel
Black Boots – A hard negotiation in Arts & Teas Vintage Flea, Williamsburg
Gold belt – Impulse buy in Zara
Necklace – 1930′s vintage compass from a boutique jewelry stall at a festival
Navy trench coat – Early Christmas present from my mum
Orange hat – 1970′s hat I got from a vintage market in Brooklyn
Black purse – 1960′s bag from the Manhattan vintage fair that comes to Chelsea three times a year

What’s your favorite piece and is there a story/good deal behind it?

I’ve become really bored of shopping lately, and seem drawn to individual pieces that catch my eye.  I picked up this 1930′s compass necklace from a festival I went to this summer in South Hampton, called Escape2NY.

I was just browsing the stalls when I came across it.  I never buy jewelry for myself but felt particularly drawn to this so instantly made a case for it there and then.  It ended up being quite an expensive weekend getaway

What/who inspires your style?

People.  On the street.  I’m not a fan of celebrities, never follow them.  I love seeing girls in chic outfits that they’ve probably just thrown on that morning – girls that just look comfortable in what they’re wearing.  If there’s an opportune moment, I’ll ask the girl where she got something from.  It always tends to be from a market or from another country (!), so I end up trying to memorize the look

How would you describe your style? Hipster-chic? Dumpster-prep? (kidding on that one… sort of)

Err . . . I don’t know, how would you describe it?  It kind of changes each day depending how I feel when I get up.

Any good deal behind anything you wore in the shoot?

My leggings that I can’t live without – £3.99 from a high street store in London!

375 Style: Malcolm Egun

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

As with most creative companies in NYC, we’re not short on employees with an amazing (and sometimes bold) sense of style. To celebrate the fashion-forward among us, we’ve created 375 Style, a feature replete with photos, insights into their style and, of course, clothes.  This week, Assistant Account Executive  Malcolm Egun.

What are you wearing?
Shirt – Perry Ellis
Jeans – True Religion
Shoes- Stacy Adams

What’s your favorite piece and is there a story/good deal behind it?
MY favorite has to be my True Religions. I love those jeans with all my heart. It’s an addiction I have a collection at home. No story, they just look good with everything I wear!

What/who inspires your style?
I would have to say Tyson Beckford and actor Idris Elba. They have a suave bad boy style which I inherit with pride. I have numerous tattoos but keep my style very clean cut like them.

How would you describe your style? Hipster-chic? Dumpster-prep? (kidding on that one… sort of)
I would say my style is ME. I don’t follow trends. I like to be creative and put things together and let the audience judge my creation (insert evil laugh here). I guess some would say I dress preppy.

Any good deal behind anything you wore in the shoot?
My jeans! LOL. They initially cost $230, but I got them for $90. What can I say? I just throw it in the bag.

375 Style: Thea Hughes

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

As with most creative companies in NYC, we’re not short on employees with an amazing (and sometimes bold) sense of style. To celebrate the fashion-forward among us, we’ve created 375 Style, a feature replete with photos, insights into their style and, of course, clothes.  This week, Assistant Account Executive at SaatchiNY Thea Hughes.

Day 1

What are you wearing (brands)?

  • Top Olivia (Anthropologie) $68
  • Joe’s Jeans $120
  • Shoes –Nine West
  • Cuff — Rome, Italy
  • Earrings– Chanel
  • Ring– T& Co.
  • Necklace — From my Oma: (Priceless)

What’s your favorite piece and is there a story/good deal behind it?

I went home to Canada last weekend to visit my family and for my Opa’s memorial. My Oma gave me this necklace as a graduation present but also as a gift from my Opa. The script reads : “Mein Schatz” in German meaning “My Darling”… which was what my Oma & Opa always used to call me

What/who inspires your style?

I’m inspired by Music, art & people:

  • Music is a huge part of my life that really is reflected more internally with my personality
  • Art, in particular street art, has really changed my perspective on how to put pieces together and the pursuit in finding the culture behind everything that I do/buy
  • I also can’t get enough of Men’s fashion which comes out in my daily people-watching ventures. It  inspires me in a reversed psychological  kind of way.

How would you describe your style? Hipster-chic? Dumpster-prep? (kidding on that one… sort of)

I think of my style as Modern- minimalist. I lean towards classic silhouettes and colors with statement pieces, fabrics or a splash of color.

Any good deal behind anything you wore in the shoot? (i.e.: Lani got her amazing shoes for $30, when the retail was something like $300).

I have good gf’s who work at all the right places — Shirt & Pants were half off with their discount!

Day 2

What are you wearing (brands)?

  • Top – Zara, Italy
  • Skirt – Los Angeles Boutique
  • Shoes -  Deena & Ozzy
  • Watch – Juicy Couture
  • Earrings & Ring – T&Co

What’s your favorite piece and is there a story/good deal behind it?

Aside from the necklace– Probably the skirt. Its from a little Boutique in LA from the Owners original collection. I like shopping for ‘pieces’!

375 Style: Rodes Ponzer

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Looking sharp.

As with most creative companies in NYC, we’re not short on employees with an amazing (and sometimes bold) sense of style. To celebrate the fashion-forward among us, we’ve created 375 Style, a feature replete with photos, insights into their style and, of course, clothes.  This week, SVP, Management Director at SaatchiNY Rodes Ponzer.

What are you wearing (brands)?

Very few brands actually…. Suit and shirt are bespoke by a friend, the master tailor Peter Daswani. The Tie is from Ferragamo. The loafers are called Mr. Casuals (you really can’t make that up) and they come from the Belgian Shoe Store.

What’s your favorite piece and is there a story/good deal behind it?

My watch.  My mom gave me this watch when I graduated from Franklin & Marshall.  It’s made by a fine old American watch company called Hamilton.  The reason she gave me this particular watch was 2 fold:  1) The original Hamilton watch company was established and based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania down the street from my College.  2) My grandfather carried a Hamilton pocket watch given to him by the Kentucky State Senate in 1940.

What/who inspires your style?
Anything classic.  It’s really interesting when one looks at the history of men’s fashion and sees why certain elements of men’s style have stood the test of time.

How would you describe your style? Hipster-chic? Dumpster-prep? (kidding on that one… sort of)

Dumpster-Prep is an amazing style for sure, but not exactly for me.

I had to conform to a dress code throughout my entire education. Dress codes have pro’s and con’s.  One thing that is great about a dress code is that you never have to worry very much about what you are going to wear, so that eliminates a lot of adolescent stress about looking cool.  That said, you’re still a kid trying to express your individuality, so you try to look for very subtle ways to highlight your personality within the given dress code.  I think that philosophy has carried through to my professional and adult life: Abide by the rules, but always try to tweak it just a little bit. So I’ll sometimes try to spice up an ordinarily bland number with an interesting pocket square, loud socks (when the weather or special occasion require that I actually wear socks) or mixing patterns.

Any good deal behind anything you wore in the shoot? (i.e.: Lani got her amazing shoes for $30, when the retail was something like $300).
I would never divulge such secrets.
