As an integrated planner, I spend a lot of time reading decks. Decks about social, decks about planning, decks about social planning . . . you get the picture. The H/H team thought it would be fun to start asking planners which decks they’d been getting the most out of recently, and I’m kickstarting said project here. Happy keynoting!

STOCK & FLOW

A content curation and creation deck, stock & flow explains the basic concept of social sharing and influencing. use it for personal brand use or client brand use – in the end, they’re pretty similar, right?

WHY PLANNERS & CREATIVES SHOULD BE BEST FRIENDS

This deck is chock full with the kind of thinking all agencies should take on – integrated planning. It explains why creatives and planners should work together from the start, why strategy shouldn’t be trying to justify creative in the aftermath, and why in reality, planners and creatives are very similar jobs (gasp!). P.S. follow @stefsel – he wrote it & is the Group Creative Director at Boondoggle

SOCIAL LISTENING

A deck by yours truly @cristina_simone and past Saatchi rockstar @rosiesiman, this  social listening tools deck will give you reviews of tools you can use for free. It also explains what social listening brings to the table, and just how important it is to actually take what consumers say online seriously. It’s an unbiased focus group people… get with it!

HOW TO TALK TO PEOPLE ABOUT ABSTRACT STUFF

Get off your ass and talk to people… that’s the gist of this awesome deck from Farrah Bostic. It doesn’t have to be 1,000 people. It can be 10 on the line of Shake Shack. Determine what nuggets of insight you acquired from those 10 3-minute conversations and run with it. And hey, maybe throw some social listening in there using the above deck as a guide. The possibilities are endless!

WHAT DO YOU DO AT SAATCHI & SAATCHI?
In the end, I think we’re all trying to do the same thing: make good stuff.   To be a bit more specific, I try and develop ideas that do things for people rather than just say things at people. The end result being that, hopefully, people don’t just look at what we create, they actually participate in it.

FAVORITE CHILDHOOD TELEVISION PROGRAM?
Tiswas – a Saturday morning classic where I was once in the crowd.

King St. Q&A w/ Brian Carley

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Brian Carley

Brian Carley is an integrated Executive Creative Director at SaatchiNY. In the past, he’s done work clients like: Ford, Revlon, 2K Games, Microsoft, Jet Blue and a whole lot more. As you can see from the above photo, he’s also a collector of pretty awesome tattoos. If you’re interested in learning more about Brian, feel free to check out his website & to follow him on twitter @sonora23.

WHAT DO YOU DO AT SAATCHI & SAATCHI?
I am the integrated executive creative director. I’m helping to create a culture of integrated thinking here at Saatchi, moving away from traditional advertising and starting to think about how we create unique experiences for our brands far beyond the 30-second TV spot.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
I was a lifeguard at my local municipal pool.

WHAT LED YOU ON THE PATH YOU’RE ON TODAY?
It was somewhat accidental. I love art and I love design. I received a degree in filmmaking but during my last year of college got a full-time job as an HTML coder at a small interactive ad agency. I quickly started to realize that I could apply design to the code and make more interesting things. After that I just continued to move up through the ranks, jumped around to work at a lot of different agencies and in many different types of environments so that I could have experience in all areas of the profession.

IF YOU WEREN’T IN ADVERTISING, WHAT CAREER WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO TRY?
I would be a musician.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE YOUTUBE VIDEO?
This is a more difficult question than you might think because now essentially everything that exists in a video format lives on youtube. However, I recently rediscovered this little gem:

Also anything with Dr. Steve Brule

TELL US SOMETHING SURPRISING ABOUT YOURSELF:
I have a tattoo(s).

WHAT ARE YOUR LOVEMARKS?
Apple.

WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE STORY?
When I was much younger, during a white-water rafting trip with my family in North Carolina, in a moment of sheer adrenaline, I witnessed my brother exhibiting super-human strength. When my mother was knocked out of the raft in deep, cold, rocky and very rapid moving water, my brother single-handedly lifted her out of the water effortlessly in order to save her from possibly impending doom. I’ll never forget the image. The thought of that moment even at a young age made me think that people are truly capable of amazing things, whether physical or not.

FAVORITE CHILDHOOD TELEVISION PROGRAM?
Manimal.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CREATIVE PURSUIT?
I love music. I play and record at home and usually perform live at least once a month. It’s such an important part of who I am, it will always be an enormous part of my life in some way.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?
Cook. Get super nerdy about music. Draw pictures. Play video games.

WHAT WAS THE LAST SONG YOU PLAYED ON YOUR IPOD?
Bon Iver – Perth

Tumblr, in general. There is so much random and wonderful stuff on it. And ffffound.com

Summertime by J.M. Coetzee

A GUILTY PLEASURE FOR ME IS:
Watching entire seasons of television shows on Netflix instead of sleeping and also bacon.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE GREATEST INVENTION IS IN YOUR LIFETIME AND WHY?
I would say the iPod. It’s changed music, they way it is listened to consumed, but most importantly the way it gets new and talented artists into the hands of people who would normally never been exposed to them.

WHAT’S THE LAST GREAT TRIP YOU WENT ON?
A week in St. Lucia where I climbed the Pitons (and received one of the most severe sunburns of my life)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST/MUSICIAN/DESIGNER?

Difficult question.  Currently:
Artist – Magritte / Musician – Johnny Cash / Designer – Paul Rand

WHEN’S THE LAST TIME YOU GAVE A STANDING OVATION?
When I saw Spider Man:Turn off the Dark. Wait, no that’s not true.

Together Counts

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Last week we launched “Together Counts,” a social health movement aimed at helping families lead healthier and more active lives through the concept of energy balance.  The creation and launch of the brand for the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation was a 6 month, whirlwind process!

What is energy balance, you ask? It’s a simple idea- the calories we consume should be balanced by the calories we expend on physical activity.

Together Counts invites people to get involved by taking a simple pledge: Eat at least 1 meal and do at least 1 activity together with your family (or “family” of your choosing) every week.

Our website and facebook application employ simple game mechanics.  People get points for keeping their commitment to their family pledge of meals and activities together. Points unlock special badges and eventually the goal is to tie it to real-world incentives.

IT STARTS WITH US

April 28, 2011- Some of the Together Counts team w/ kids from the SaatchiNY family

Together Counts is about to launch across the country, but it starts here, with us at SaatchiNY. We tied the launch of Together Counts to Bring Your Kids to Work Day, showing kids the nuts and bolts of an advertising agency, while also teaching them (in a fun way!) to make better choices for healthy and active living. The schedule of activities captured the notion of energy balance, as equal importance was placed on proper nutrition and exercise. By the end of the day we had 30 enthusiastic new ambassadors for Together Counts. Be on the lookout for their video project, a launch video for the Together Counts facebook page! Just take a look at the young SaatchiNY-ers who got involved with Together Counts™ during Bring Your Kids To Work Day last Thursday.
