Links You Should Give A S#*T About

Friday, February 10th, 2012

It’s Friday, which means another lunch-time edition of Links You Should Give a S#*t About.

BANDSINTOWN

Bandsintown is the #1 live music application for fans and artists. This application connects with your Facebook account and makes sure you are the first to know when your favorite bands are coming to town.

METROCHANGE

A smart, awesome fundraising/charity initiative for New Yorkers. Every year, millions of dollars worth of value on MTA MetroCards is lost or discarded. Metrochange takes this value and puts it to good use before cards are discarded. Swipe your MetroCard at a MetroChange kiosk; the value on the card is transferred to a central fund. This fund is donated to a charity once per month. The physical card is taken for recycling.

ONE HELLO WORLD

One Hello World is a collection of voice mails set to music. Leave a voice mail and music is automatically generated to play behind your narrative. Call it a soundtrack to your thoughts. (316) 247-0421

UNIVERSITY MEMES

One of the biggest memes online at the moment is a meme generator (we’re getting pretty meta here) called University Memes. It’s a timewasting tool of the highest order, aimed at a generation with tons of time on their hands – college students.  To find your university’s, go to Facebook and search it. Generally that is where each university is putting them together in one place. There’s also a freshman specific meme compilation, for you seniors who are just so much more experienced.

Internet privacy, the web’s favorite January meme takes on New Yorkers and a Tumblr dedicated to Suri Cruise. We’re bringing a wide variety of internet good stuffs this week. Happy browsing!

WHAT’S GOOGLE KNOW ABOUT YOU?

Thanks to Google’s new privacy policy, you can now see exactly how old they think you are, where you live, and what your interests are.

SURI’S BURN BOOK
This Tumblr is a thing of beauty. Spoken in the voice and attitude of what we all assume Suri Cruise speaks in, this blog is a compilation of the children of Hollywood, and Suri’s take on them. Her commentary on a photo of her and her father, Tom Cruise, at Disneyland? “I don’t particularly like going to Disneyland with Tom, but I needed someone to carry my bag.” Enough said.

S#*T NEW YORKERS SAY

By now you’ve all seen the endless videos of “S#*t ____  Say”. The original, S#*t Girls Say, is still the best. HOWEVER, a close second took the internet by storm this month. In the spirit of … well actually in the spirit of nothing. We’re New Yorkers and don’t need a reason to laugh at ourselves. Or the amazing, dirty, beautiful city we live in.

STICKYGRAM

All of those cool Instagram photos you take that make your life look way cooler than it actually is can now be turned into real-life magnets!

Links You Should Give A S#*t About

Friday, January 20th, 2012

This week was all about Super Bowl Buzz and SOPA. We hope you enjoy our roundup this installment of weekly internet goings-on.

STAR WARS BARK FEST

Super Bowl ad madness has begun. Here’s the trailer for VW’s follow-up to “The Force.”

THE INTERNET HATES SOPA

By now, you should know what SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is. If not, it is “a pending bill geared toward preempting U.S. property theft by promoting creativity and innovation.”  We’ve embedded our favorite “black out” of the week, which comes from the always hilarious The Oatmeal. The article on Good.is is worth the read! It discusses the progress of the anti-SOPA movement and how powerful its proving Internet users to be!

WHAT DO AD AGENCIES DO?

Regular ad-stuff commentator Faris Yakob put out an interesting piece for The One Club on what ad agencies actually do. Some good points in here, and definitely a conversation starter.

NOLITA HEARTS

Nolita is one of New York’s hottest neighborhoods. It’s a remarkably diverse vibrant neighborhood – a mix of Little Italy, China Town, Noho and Soho – on the cusp of fashion, home wares and top notch eating. Nolita Hearts began as a way to document this ever-evolving hood, not as a list of stores and generic reviews, but through the eyes of local “Nolitans” as we experience it. Through personal relationships with store owners, constant interaction with local style driven community members, inside scoops on new products and an eye for new street art Nolita Hearts strives to give readers a true inside look at what Nolita is really all about – People and Culture. We talked to the creator, Hally, and this is what she had to say, “I originally started Nolita Hearts because I was literally moved by the interesting people, street art, stores, and fashion that were constantly changing around me. Every time I stepped out of my apartment I felt a buzz of culture and felt that I needed to get that feeling out. I didn’t know if it was possible to capture the essence of my neighborhood and translate the stories and creativity of the people to others, but I figured even if it wasn’t, it was still a great release for me. Over time I’ve found that other people really do find Nolita as amazing as I do!”

The Advertising Blog …

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

In our weekly King St. Q&A we ask everyone the question – “What blogs/websites/etc. could you not live without.” It’s a way to learn what people are reading, and in a perfect world, a place to find out about cool new stuff. Over time I’ve noticed that most people are reading Mashable or Creativity-Online, but a lot of my favorite marketing & advertising blogs weren’t ever mentioned. This is a place to take a closer look at a few. Today’s focus – Ad Of Da Month.

Ad of Da Month, which recently featured Saatchi NY’s Lenovo: For Those Who Do spots, has assembled a jury of creatives across the world to pick the best user-submitted entries and dub one “Ad of Da Month” every, well, month.

Straight from the horse’s mouth, here’s what the creators have to say. “Sure, there are other blogs and forums to see the work being done across the globe, but no one else is picking a winner. So, send in your stuff. There’s a chance that your ego may suffer a crushing blow on a global scale. Then again, there are a number of CDs on our jury. So, who knows? Maybe one of your ads will get you a job in Sydney or Dubai or Capetown or even good old Budapest.”

Links You Should Give a S#*t About

Friday, January 13th, 2012

We’d like to say that this edition of Links You Should Give a S#*t About is extra spooky-scary, being Friday the 13th and all. Unfortunately the internet was short on scary this week, so you’ll have to settle for your average, everyday cool stuff. Enjoy!

NEWSWEEK’S MAD MEN THROWBACK

To celebrate the premiere of Mad Men’s highly anticipated 5th season, Newsweek is attempting to put together an all-in, advertisements-included throwback issue.

SKILLSHARE

Skillshare’s Manifesto Video was blazing up Twitter this week, and for good reason. It’s inspirational advertising at its best and a really great idea.

PRET-A-LEFTOVERS

Lunch lovers up and down the block are happy a Pret A Manger opened recently across the street from SaatchiNY’s offices. We’re happy that they give all their leftover fresh food to the city’s homeless. Take note other restaurants.

MY FIRST YEAR W/ CRISTINA PANSOLINI

It’s always nice to see a hardworking employee getting some exposure. That’s why we loved this Advertising Week (the event, not the magazine) profile on our own intern-turned-employee Cristina Pansolini.

LENOVO AT CES

In case you were hiding under a rock this week, CES was happening in Las Vegas. We fought the urge to share all the cool stuff in this post because a team of Saatchi NYers were on the ground and have a round-up in the works for next week. But we did want to show off what our client Lenovo had up their sleeve.

CODECADEMY

You know what everyone should do this year? Learn how to code! Codecademy is a great place to do it for free.

Links You Should Give a S#*t About

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Happy Friday! We hope everyone enjoyed their first week of 2012 as much as we did. To close out the week right, we offer you our year’s first edition of the best and brightest from the internet.

THIS IS YOUR TIMELINE ON DRUGS

It was only a matter of time before someone found a clever way to advertise through Facebook’s new Timeline. The Israeli Anti-Drug Authority might not have been the first one, but they’re certainly the first to do it well enough to earn lots of media attention. This is a great example of how a good idea and a new channel can come together for an awesome finished project.

BRIBERY “LIKES”

SaatchiNY and Team One Creative Director Tim Leake sat down with Yahoo to discuss how marketers are doing their best to kill the Like button. It’s a good read!

AD LIFE COMICS

Two Kansas City ad guys (we’re guessing creatives) created a recurring one-panel comic strip parodying the day-to-day of the industry. Funny stuff.

INSTAGRAM GOES TO WASHINGTON

The founders of Instagram are likely jumping with joy after the President signed up this week.

AD AGENCY RYAN GOSLING

It was only a matter of time before the Ryan Gosling Tumblr meme found its way into the advertising world.
