Howard U + Saatchi NY

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

Last week, students from the AAF/Howard University “AdCamp” program visited our Hudson street home for a behind-the scenes peek into ad land.

Following a quick tour of our sweet office space, visiting students and professors were shown some of our latest and greatest creative work.

Hosted by Caitlin Reynolds, students and professors then participated in an interactive discussion about a Day in Life – only to learn there’s no such thing as a “typical day” in an ad agency! The group (we think, at least) had a great time, and shout out to the professors were just as excited and interested as the students.

Saatchi’s involvement in the program continues later this week as Natasha Williamson will be traveling to down to Howard University in Washington DC to help the same group of students prepare for their Marketing case study presentation

KEITH STONE

The smooth Keystone Light mascot has continued to be a fan favorite.

LINKS MBA STUDENTS SHOULD GIVE A S#*T ABOUT

Following a visit from a group of MBA students last September, we dedicated our weekly links round-up to things they might find interesting.

7×7 (Two Times Over)

We decided to bundle these posts into a single unit, since we loved both equally. Check out recaps of our first event at SaatchiNY headquarters and the more recent Advertising Week edition at BB Kings.

LET’S GET UNREASONABLE

This video was sort of a mantra for 2011. We like it as much today as we did last January.

Matt Van Hoven is the Communications Director at SKINNY, a New York based agency serving as thought leadership and chief creative architect for their clients. There he provides cross-disciplinary communications strategy, creates new relationships for the agency and funnels the agency’s creativity to the outside world. Prior to joining SKINNY Matt spent two years as the Editor of AgencySpy, where he covered just about every subject in advertising, provided outside feedback on new work and conceived new methods for understanding modern communications. But mostly he shook things up.

Jason Feifer is a senior editor at Fast Company. During college, he discovered he has severe hyposmia—a near-inability to smell or perceive flavor in food—and he’s since spent years researching the condition, and his written about it for Men’s Health (where he was a senior editor), Women’s Health, and the Washington Post. His work has appeared in the New York Times, Associated Press, SalonESPN the Magazine, and others. He lives in Brooklyn, and can be reached through jasonfeifer.com or on Twitter at @heyfeifer.

Hilarious, brilliant, unpredictable – comedian/musician Reggie Watts is a staple of the international performance scene. Reggie’s improvised musical sets are created on-the-spot using only his formidable voice and a looping machine. No two songs are ever the same. An avowed “disinformationist,” Reggie loves to disorientate his audiences in the most entertaining way. You may not know what Reggie is going to do, but that’s okay – he doesn’t either.  As a solo performer, Reggie was handpicked by Conan O’Brien to open nightly on Conan’s entire North American “Prohibited From Being Funny on Television” tour.  Reggie was featured as “Hot Comedian” in Rolling Stone’s Hot Issue 2010, named SPIN Magazine’s “Best New Comedian” and “Best of CMJ” 2010, and a featured profile in GQ’s Man Of The Year issue 2010.

Jess Greenwood is the Director of the Contagious consultancy Insider, which offers advice and insight to a number of clients from both agencies and advertisers. Prior to that, she spent a stint teaching music and drama in France and Italy before returning to London to work as a music producer and occasional writer. One more career change landed her in the advertising industry as Editor of The Reel (a monthly publication showcasing the best global creative in advertising, music videos and short films), before helping to launch Contagious. Jess is addicted to the radio and the internet in equal measure, and has a ravenous appetite for unearthing the dark underbelly of sport.

Todd Greene, inventor and industrial designer, is the founder of HeadBlade, an innovative grooming products company headquartered in Los Angeles. Todd’s eponymous shaving invention has been named by TIME magazine’s “Best Inventions Of 2000″ and the proprietary razor is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He blogs for Huffington Post and was named to GQ’s Bald 100 in 2010.

Con Williamson, Chief Creative Officer at Saatchi NY , will round out our seven as host for the event. He describes his working style as vibrant and loud. He loves making stuff and loves to do it with smart people. He’s a big believer in the collective, which is where ideas come from.  His approach to problem-solving is the big Italian family dinner where you get everyone around the table, it’s rowdy and chaotic, and you get all the ideas out on the table. Ideas come first, and great ideas can come from anyone.

Bob Gruen is one of the most respected photographers in Rock and Roll history. Since the ’70s on he’s shot numerous pop culture icons, including John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. He also photographed and filmed the early New Wave and Punk movements, including The New York Dolls, Patti Smith, The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Ramones & Blondie. Bob’s iconic photograph of John Lennon’s sleeveless New York City shirt is still found on posters and t-shirts the world round.

The Awkward Interns

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Some of the interns, hard at work

Editor’s Note: It’s officially summer… The rooftop drinking and summer Fridays have begun. Shorts and flip-flops become acceptable office attire. And you know what that really means: interns have arrived. We’ve got nearly 30 hard-working interns who infiltrated our agency last Monday, and they’re already showing us up. Even so, we couldn’t say no when they asked if they could run a summer series on our blog. So without further ado, from the eyes of a Saatchi intern:

Speaking for the 2011 summer internship class, we just want to thank you for giving us this opportunity because firstly, Saatchi is an awesome company and secondly, applying for another internship sounds kind of awful.

THE AWKWARD TRUTH
Since it’s our first week, we’re mostly handling the simple stuff. We’re still learning our brands and departments, so we’re eased in with tasks like ordering lunch and making copies. Truth be told, we’re so happy to be here that its great . . . but the fear of messing up a simple task can create enough anxiety to get you acting a little weird. We promise we don’t ALWAYS walk into glass doors, trip over our own feet or accidentally order six extra diet cokes.

And In our efforts to be seen as mature and capable young adults (and potential future employees), we act stoic and conservative. We take down that freak flag, which flew so freely just a few days earlier. We suppress our urges to talk about beer, minimize our Facebook pages when people walk by our cubes, and use that special “polite voice” usually reserved only for talking to your boyfriend or girlfriend’s mother or ordering a drink at a fancy restaurant. But I promise that our personalities, currently buried under a pile of first-week jitters, will surface soon enough. Brace yourselves, people, the awkward interns have arrived.

INTERNS UNITE
But let’s be honest: it’s only fun being awkward when you can laugh at yourself. So we’re calling interns everywhere to send us your stories. Are you reading this and at another agency . . . share anyway! All entries are anonymous and welcome. We’ll share the best ones (yours or ours!) here on Hudson/Houston throughout the summer. Maybe even with snarky commentary from our supervisors.

Geminis Give Back Event

Melky Jean rocked our Holiday party last December and she’s back next Thursday, June 16th to present a highly anticipated charity benefit, the 4th Annual Geminis Give Back Event! For the last few years, Melky Jean has dedicated her birthday to sowing good Carma by raising money towards improving the lives of the women and children in Haiti, supporting the restructuring of a city torn apart by environmental tragedy, and endorsing the advancement of the land and its people through the Carma Foundation.  The Carma Foundation is a nonprofit organization that effectively utilizes media and pop culture to create a platform of awareness, dialogue, and then action

Geminis Give Back draws the attention and support of a variety of people and has featured celebrities like the legendary Patti LaBelle, Vivica A. Fox, the Former Miss USA, New York’s very own K. Foxx, super producer and artist Wyclef Jean, and many more! This year’s line up is equally amazing with Royce Reed of VH1′s hit show Basketball Wives, John Starks of the NY Knicks, TV personality Egypt, Omarosa, and many familiar celebrity faces.

This special event also features the “Hope In Haiti” exhibit by photographer Elizabeth Jordan on behalf of The Children of the Carma House. Curated by Helen During.

Thursday, June 16th in Sspace at 7PM. Tickets are $75 for Saatchi & Saatchi employees and tax deductible.

Please RSVP to Cristina Pansolini at cristina.pansolini@saatchiny.com.
